Sustainability can mean different things to different people. It can be an idea, a property of living systems, a manufacturing method, or a way of life, all simultaneously. Although the definition of sustainable development given by the Brundtland Commission is the most frequently quoted, it is not universally accepted and keeps changing. Sustainability is a very general concept like “liberty” or “justice”, and defies an agreeable definition. A further practical difficulty with a universal definition of sustainability is that strategies needed to address it will vary according to the particular circumstances.

For want of a simple definition let’s use the American Heritage Dictionary’s 2nd definition; Capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment: sustainable agriculture.
